How Do You Get Your Business Mentioned by AI Tools Like ChatGPT?

Courage Horizon · August 2026

Type your own company name into ChatGPT and ask it to recommend a business like yours. Nothing comes back. The reflex is to rewrite the homepage: tighter copy, a sharper meta description. That fixes the wrong layer.

Getting mentioned by an AI tool is getting cited in the third-party pages and discussion threads the model already trusts. Rewriting your own homepage does not change that. Ask ChatGPT to recommend a tool in almost any software category and look at what it actually names as evidence: comparison threads, review roundups, forum answers, rarely the vendor’s own page. That is the pattern Sourcive was built to measure: whether an AI assistant mentions a business when its own customers ask for a recommendation.

Why doesn’t my own website show up when I ask?

Ask Perplexity or ChatGPT to recommend a tool in a category and look at what it actually cites. Usually two or three sources. Rarely the vendor’s own page. The model has just run a live retrieval step, pulled several pages, and it treats a company’s description of itself as one interested account among many. Five different Reddit users comparing the same three tools reads as independent corroboration. A homepage making the identical claim reads as marketing copy, because it is.

Ranking and citation are different mechanisms. A page can sit first on Google and still never get quoted in a ChatGPT answer, because Google ranks one page against another while an AI assistant assembles its answer from several sources at once, weighing how many of them agree. Imagine asking “best [category] tool for a five-person team”. A typical answer names two products and adds something like “others on r/SaaS report similar results with X”, a line pulled from a Reddit thread rather than from either vendor’s site.

What does Reddit actually have to do with it?

Reddit shows up disproportionately often in AI citations for a structural reason, not a popularity contest. A thread comparing three tools already contains the comparative phrasing a buyer types into a search box - “X vs Y”, “I switched from A because B” - written by someone with no stake in the answer. A retrieval system assembling a recommendation is looking for exactly that: several independent people converging on the same claim. A single company’s homepage can never supply that kind of corroboration about itself, however well it is written. Ask Perplexity to compare two established products in a mature software category and read the citations it names. They tend to be threads and comparison pages with several named participants, not a single vendor’s own copy.

So if not the homepage, what actually works?

Two things, and neither is a rewrite of your existing marketing copy. First, be present in the discussion that already happens about your category, so there is something genuine for the model to find and corroborate. Second, publish content elsewhere in a form the model can lift directly: FAQ pages that answer the literal question a buyer types, comparison content, structured data, a plain-text summary of what you do. Sourcive’s paid report is built around this split. It lists the buyer questions where a business never appears, names the pages and communities cited in its place, and generates the FAQ, JSON-LD and llms.txt file needed to fix each one.

Getting cited and being described accurately are two different failures. This piece is about the first. Why does ChatGPT describe my company incorrectly? covers the second, where a model repeats stale facts about a company long after they changed.

Common questions

Does this mean traditional SEO doesn’t matter any more? No. Ranking well on Google still drives traffic, and some AI Overviews results pull straight from top-ranking pages. The two mechanisms just run in parallel rather than one feeding the other: an AI assistant assembling a recommendation weighs corroboration across several sources, so a page can rank first and still never get quoted in the answer.

How do I find out which buyer questions my business is missing from? Ask the AI tools directly and systematically, the way a real customer would phrase the question, rather than searching your own brand name. Sourcive does this by taking a company’s URL, working out what it does and who it competes with, then running real buyer-intent questions against the OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity APIs to measure whether and how the business gets mentioned.

Do I need to be personally active on Reddit to get cited there? Not necessarily as the vendor. What gets cited is genuine discussion in which independent people compare options and corroborate a claim, and that discussion can come from customers rather than the company itself. A single self-promotional post rarely reads as the kind of corroboration these engines weight.
