Is ChatGPT quietly sending my customers to competitors?

Courage Horizon · September 2026

A client you never worried about tells you they’re going with someone else. You ask why, half expecting a price objection, and they say: “I just asked ChatGPT.” No referral link, no search term in your analytics, no warning. AI recommendation is a buyer typing a question like “who’s the best [what you do] for [what they need]” into a model and getting back a short list of company names, and it runs as its own channel, entirely separate from where you rank on Google. Your competitor doesn’t have to outrank you anywhere for this to happen. They only have to be the name the model says out loud. It is worth checking systematically for your own business, rather than leaving the discovery to an offhand comment from a customer walking out the door.

Why does this never show up in your analytics?

Nothing about an AI recommendation touches a system you can see. A search engine at least logs the query and, if you’re lucky, a click. A chat assistant answers inside its own window: no referral header arrives at your site, no query lands in Search Console, and the customer who was recommended a competitor may never visit your site at all before they call the other company. The loss looks identical to a customer who simply went quiet, which is exactly why a founder can run a clean month by every number they track and still be losing deals to a name a model keeps handing out instead of theirs.

How often does a business get left off the list entirely?

Often enough that it’s worth checking rather than assuming. The agency dijitul ran this test on itself: twelve buyer-intent questions, the kind a real prospect types, such as “who are the best web design agencies in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire” and “where can I find a web designer near Mansfield who also does SEO”, put to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Across all three models, dijitul was named in 31% of the answers, and when it was named, it appeared at position 2.1 on average rather than first. Two-thirds of the time, across three separate models, the agency wasn’t mentioned at all for a question it should have owned.

Does ranking well on Google protect you from this?

No. Google’s ranking and a model’s recommendation aren’t built from the same list of pages. dijitul’s own answers leaned on a specific, narrow set of pages: local directories, a handful of “best agencies in Mansfield” roundup posts, and one of dijitul’s own guides, not the pages that happen to rank first on Google for the same search. A model recommending your competitor is not re-running your Google ranking in the background and disagreeing with it. It’s building an answer from whichever pages state a clear, checkable claim about who does what, for whom, and those pages are frequently not the ones sitting at the top of a search results page. Why does ChatGPT recommend your competitor instead of you? goes into exactly how a model decides who to name, for anyone who wants the mechanism rather than the symptom.

What can you do about it tonight?

Open ChatGPT and type the actual question your customers would type, not a version softened for search, and read the names it gives back the way a stranger would. Do it again in Claude and in Perplexity, because each pulls from a different set of sources and a mention in one says nothing about the others. If your name doesn’t come up, you now know something your monthly analytics report could never have told you. We set this up as a job for a business: an agent puts real buyer-intent questions to the assistants and reports whether and how the business gets mentioned, which turns a one-off manual check into something that repeats on a schedule. The guide How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business? walks through reading the answer once you have it.

Common questions

If a customer mentions ChatGPT recommended a competitor, is there anything I can do after the fact? Not for that specific customer, but the same question is being asked by every other prospect in your category, so the useful move is to test the exact phrase they used and see who gets named now, then work on why.

Does this only matter for consumer-facing businesses? No. dijitul’s own test was B2B, local web design and SEO services, and buyers researching a B2B purchase increasingly open with a model rather than a search engine for exactly the same reason: it gives them a short list instead of ten blue links to sort through themselves.

Is one AI assistant enough to check, or do I need all of them? All of them, if you want the full picture. Each assistant pulled from a different mix of sources in dijitul’s test, so a business absent from ChatGPT’s answer could still appear in Claude’s or Perplexity’s, and the reverse. It’s why the check we run puts the same buyer questions to several assistants together rather than picking one.
