Guide
How do I find out which pages AI search engines are citing instead of mine?
You type your own buyer question into ChatGPT, the kind a real customer would ask, and it answers with a competitor’s name and a link to their page. Not yours. AI citation tracking is a category of software that runs your target buyer questions against ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on a schedule and reports exactly which URL each one names as its source, whether that’s you or someone else. You don’t have to guess at this by re-typing the same question into three different chat windows every week. Otterly.ai, LLM Pulse and AirOps all do a version of this already: point one at a domain or a set of prompts, and it comes back with the specific pages getting cited in your place. We know the question is answerable because we run the same kind of check for a business, against its own buyer-intent questions specifically.
What does a citation tracker actually show you?
A citation tracker runs a list of prompts, the actual questions your buyers type, against one or more AI assistants on a repeating schedule, then logs which URL each assistant names as its source for that answer. That is a different thing from a brand mention: an assistant can say your company’s name in passing without linking to your page as the source, and a tracker built for this separates the two. Otterly.ai runs recurring prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot and logs which links get cited each time. LLM Pulse shows the full generated answer for every tracked prompt, including the list of sites cited and the order they appear in. AirOps pairs the same kind of multi-engine tracking with an agent, Quill, that turns a logged gap into a drafted fix.
| Tool | Engines it tracks | What it shows you |
|---|---|---|
| Otterly.ai | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot | Recurring brand mentions and link citations over time |
| LLM Pulse | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode | The full answer text plus every cited source, in order |
| AirOps | Multi-engine, via its Quill agent | Cited competitor pages, mapped to a content gap to fix |
Why does a competitor’s page get cited instead of yours?
A competitor’s page gets cited because it is easier for the assistant to lift a confident, self-contained answer out of than yours is, not because it outranks you on Google. Semrush’s research on ChatGPT’s citation behaviour found that the pages it actually cites rank in traditional organic search position 21 or lower almost 90% of the time. A page sitting on page one of Google can be entirely passed over by ChatGPT in favour of a page ranking three pages down, because the assistant isn’t reading the search results list at all. It is reading page content for a sentence it can quote, and a page ranked 21st that states its claim plainly beats a page ranked first that doesn’t. The guide Why Perplexity won’t cite your site, even with great backlinks covers this mechanism for Perplexity specifically.
Do you have to track every buyer question yourself?
You can, with a spreadsheet and a tool like Otterly.ai, LLM Pulse or AirOps, or you can start from the actual buyer-intent questions rather than guessing at them. The check we set up for a business takes that second route: an agent runs the buyer-intent questions the business’s own customers would type through the assistants directly, and records which page or community got cited in its place whenever a competitor wins the answer. The guide The Questions Your Buyers Ask AI That Your Site Never Answers has more on where those questions come from before you ever open a citation tracker.
What do you actually do once you know which page beat yours?
Read the cited page the way the assistant did: is the answer stated in the first few sentences, in plain language, without requiring the rest of the article to make sense? If your page buries the same information three paragraphs down, that is usually the whole difference, and it’s a rewrite rather than a redesign. That’s a smaller job than it sounds. Move the direct answer to the top, state it in one sentence, and check it against the cited page again next week.
Common questions
Is a brand mention the same as a citation? No. A mention is your name appearing somewhere in the answer text. A citation is the assistant naming your page as the source it drew the answer from, and only a citation sends a reader to your site. A tracker built for this reports the two separately rather than folding them into one number.
Do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite the same pages for the same question? Not reliably. Each assistant draws on its own index and its own set of preferred source types, so a page cited by one can be missing entirely from another’s answer to the identical prompt, which is why a tracker covering only one engine gives a partial picture.
Is there a tool that does this for a specific business’s own buyer questions, not just generic keywords? That is how we set the job up for a business: an agent puts its real buyer-intent questions to the assistants and reports which pages and communities were cited in its place, rather than tracking generic category keywords.
