Should You Pay Someone to Get Mentioned by ChatGPT?

Courage Horizon · September 2026

Paying for placement inside ChatGPT is not a real product. What an agency sells you is the same crawlable-content work you could do yourself, just done faster.

Say an agency just pitched you a monthly retainer to get your business “into ChatGPT.” Before you sign anything, it is worth knowing exactly what that retainer would buy.

A sponsored ChatGPT mention is a paid line inserted directly into the assistant’s own answer, and no such product exists, from OpenAI or from anyone reselling access to it. Nothing you can buy puts your business into a recommendation the way a paid listing puts a business at the top of a directory.

Is there actually a way to pay for a mention?

No submission form exists, and no database of paying businesses sits behind ChatGPT’s answers. Surmado’s review of these pitches is blunt about it: anyone claiming you can pay to get listed in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini is lying, because there is no paid placement system and no form to submit a business to. Instead, the assistants assemble an answer from whatever they can already crawl: the pages on a site, the schema markup on those pages, and the mentions of the business elsewhere on the web. A page that cannot be crawled cannot be cited, whatever an agency charges to change that.

Even OpenAI’s own paid product proves the point rather than undermining it. ChatGPT does carry labelled ads now, but OpenAI’s own documentation says those ads are visually separated from ChatGPT’s response and run on a separate system that cannot shape, rank or alter what the assistant actually answers. If OpenAI’s own advertising arm cannot buy its way into an answer, an outside agency certainly cannot either.

This is the exact confusion a measurement clears up: whether a business already gets mentioned, checked directly in the assistants, rather than guessed at from whatever a sales pitch implies.

What the pitch impliesWhat actually happens
”We submit your business to ChatGPT”There is no submission form and nothing to submit to
”Guaranteed placement within two weeks”Assistants crawl and re-check sources on their own schedule, not a client’s
”A sponsored slot inside your answer”OpenAI’s own ads are kept separate from the model’s answer text

So what is actually being sold?

The work behind a legitimate retainer is the same crawlable-content work a measurement identifies: rewritten pages that answer real buyer questions directly, an FAQ that covers the questions your site currently leaves unanswered, and structured data an assistant can parse without guessing. None of that is a backdoor into ChatGPT. It is ordinary content and technical work, sold at agency speed instead of founder speed.

What can you do yourself, and when is paying actually worth it?

Most of it is doable in a week without hiring anyone: write direct, question-shaped answers to the handful of things buyers actually ask, publish an FAQ that covers them, fix anything blocking crawlers, and make sure the facts about the business read the same on the site as everywhere else it is mentioned.

Paying starts to make sense once the bottleneck is genuinely execution, not access: dozens of pages need rewriting at once, nobody in-house has the time this month, or the technical work (schema, llms.txt, site structure) needs a skill the team does not have. Pay for the labour, in that case, with clear eyes about what it is.

Common questions

Can any agency truly guarantee a ChatGPT mention? No. Nobody controls what an assistant retrieves or cites on a given day, including OpenAI’s own advertisers. A guarantee of a specific mention by a specific date is a promise no one selling this work can actually keep.

Is this different from paying for Google Ads? Yes. A Google Ad buys a labelled, visible slot at the top of a results page. There is no equivalent slot inside a ChatGPT answer that can be bought, labelled or otherwise, once you leave OpenAI’s own ad product.

How do you check whether the work is even needed before paying anyone to do it? Manually typing the obvious questions into ChatGPT a few times only samples what you happened to ask. An agent set up to run the buyer-intent questions a business would actually be asked, through the assistants and on a schedule, reports which ones already mention it, so a founder knows what is genuinely missing before paying someone to fix it.
